I first met Bob when he gave a lecture at the Freie Universität in Berlin. With his soft Brooklyn accent slightly altered from years living in Ireland, I hardly understood a word he said, but from reading his books, I knew him to be one of the great philosophers of our time. When I moved to California we became close friends, and I immediately valued his humble and kind heart. I still had a hard time understanding him. He maybe had some trouble with my Denglish, my German-English, but Rasa often translated, and Arlen and I, having no trouble communicating, would sit on the balcony and spend hours talking about all and everything.
